With a combination of nursing and business experience, Susan Groenwald has the diverse set of skills required to lead the Chamberlain School of Nursing. She initially earned her diploma from the West Suburban School of Nursing in Oak Park, IL, and served as a Rehabilitation Nurse. After earning both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the Rush University School of Nursing in Chicago, she worked as a Clinical Nurse Specialist and Director of the Oncology Graduate Program at Rush University, and later served as the Senior Program Director at the Illinois Cancer Council’s Comprehensive Cancer Care Center.
The commercial barter company she founded grew to more than 80 total employees in four locations and Groenwald was recognized as the National Businesswoman of the Year by the National Association of Women Business Owners in 1999 and with a Blue Chip Enterprise Award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Massachusetts Mutual. After selling the company to a venture capital group and working for them for several years, she served as the Director of Operations for Focused Health Solutions, Inc., developing clinical programs and managing a team of nurses who provided disease management services for large self-insured employers. She joined DeVry Inc. in January 2006, focusing on the transition and development of the Chamberlain College of Nursing.
Groenwald is the author of numerous articles and has edited five textbooks on cancer nursing; one of them, Cancer Nursing: Principles and Practice, won the American Journal of Nursing Book Award.
