Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and
"Take a Step. Go the Distance." Scholarship Essay Contest

Chamberlain College of Nursing is proud to support one of the greatest causes of our lives—curing breast cancer forever. As a sponsor of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Chamberlain College of Nursing invited participants to write an essay about an experience in which breast cancer touched their lives. The Take a Step. Go the Distance. Scholarship Essay Contest was open to individuals interested in launching a nursing career at either our Addison, Illinois or Phoenix, Arizona campuses, or advancing their nursing career through Chamberlain’s Fast-Track RN to BSN Online Degree Completion Program. In addition, Chamberlain students across our campus locations participated in the race as Team Chamberlain.

Mission Trip to Bolivia

It was a mission Chamberlain students will always remember. Led by Chamberlain College of Nursing Associate Professor Dr. Susan Fletcher, eight nursing students from Chamberlain’s St. Louis campus recently experienced a two-week mission trip to rural Bolivia, bringing treatment and health education to residents of remote Bolivian villages. It’s a shining example of a vital part of Chamberlain’s co-curricular program – the opportunity for students to demonstrate their clinical proficiency and earn course credit through community health initiatives both locally and abroad. Chamberlain is planning to expand the mission program in the coming years.

According to Dr. Fletcher, the co-curricular program has a profound impact on students.

"They go into the trip thinking they’re going to help save the world through their treatment of the many people they meet, but they come away feeling that they have received more from the local people than they could ever have given them," she said. "They come away with a greater confidence in their ability and skills to assess patients’ conditions."

Nurses’ Day at the Ballpark

In celebration of National Nurses Week, Chamberlain College of Nursing sponsored Nurses’ Day at the Ballpark. Chamberlain students were invited to participate in the event, with a tailgate on campus followed by activities in Ford Plaza at Busch Stadium and the game! In addition, freshman and St. Louis resident Jason DeGreeff enjoyed the honor of throwing out the first pitch at a St. Louis Cardinals game last season as part of the College's “Nurses Day at the Ballpark” activities. DeGreeff was chosen for the honor based on an essay he wrote in which he shared his reasons for wanting to be a nurse. Chamberlain College of Nursing President Susan Groenwald along with five additional staff and faculty members joined DeGreeff on the field. What a game!
