Click here to find out more about the Center for Academic Success!
What is the Center for Academic Success (CAS)? The CAS is a resource center designed to assist students with academic success. The Center provides students with an opportunity to enlist the services of peer tutors for assistance with course content in both nursing and general education courses. Tutors can provide resources for academic support, advice on how to study, and insight into particular classes and instructors. The Center also holds study sessions when requested for nursing and gen ed topics, such as chemistry/microbiology, critical care nursing, and pharmacology, and algebra, for example.
Who are the people in the CAS? The coordinator of the Center for Academic Success is the former CCN BSN Academic Advisor, Meghan McGlynn. Meghan has a Master’s Degree in English and is currently working towards a Ph.D. in Education; she supervises the peer tutoring program, assesses student needs, makes referrals, implements study sessions and workshops, and assists students with writing, APA formatting, and career services. The CAS employs both peer and professional tutors. Peer Tutors are current students who have demonstrated academic excellence and who have been trained to assist their peers with schoolwork. A professional NCLEX Review tutor is also available to work with senior-level students nearing graduation in preparation for the exit and state board exams.
How does the Center work? Students can drop in any time the door is open for assistance from the tutors or Coordinator, to make use of the resources, or just for a quiet place to study! CAS hours of operation vary each semester to accommodate students’ schedules, but are typically Monday through Friday, morning until evening, and by appointment.
What can I find in the Center? The CAS has available current syllabi, textbooks, ATI and HESI exit exam materials, APA formatting software, anatomical models, subject-specific CD-ROMs and videos, and NCLEX review software and books, to name a few. The CAS also has a student notice board which can be used to post books for sale and other student-related announcements. Two new computers with printers are available for students to work on class assignments and/or print papers. A conference table for study groups, tutoring carrels for working one-on-one, a desk for quiet reading, and a sofa for reclining are provided to meet all study habits!
