College’s convenient Crystal City location will increase nursing education opportunities for the region’s aspiring nurses

ARLINGTON, Va. — April 21, 2010 — For the first time, the U.S. Department of Labor has identified registered nursing as the top occupation in terms of job growth through the year 2016. In the Washington, DC area alone, the District’s Department of Employment Services predicts 16,000 job openings for nurses each year through 2016. In response to this growing need, Chamberlain College of Nursing announced today that it will expand nursing educational opportunities in the DC Metro area by opening a new campus location in Arlington, Va. This follows the announcement last week that Chamberlain will be opening a Chicago campus in July.

The Arlington campus will offer an onsite Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program that can be completed in three years of year-round study instead of the typical four years with summers off, allowing students to enter the workforce and begin earning a salary sooner than their peers at other higher education institutions.

“The DC metro area needs increased access to high quality nursing education,” said Susan Groenwald, president of Chamberlain College of Nursing. “Chamberlain’s new campus in Arlington will allow us to help communities throughout the region respond to the critical and growing shortage of nurses that will intensify as Baby Boomers age and the need for healthcare grows.”

The Arlington campus is the 120-year-old college’s first campus on the East Coast and its seventh nationwide. “With each new campus, Chamberlain College of Nursing continues to expand its role as a strong advocate for the nursing profession, striving to honor nurses and raise awareness for healthcare causes, the national need for nurses and the need to improve the quality of healthcare,” said Groenwald.

Chamberlain’s new Arlington campus will be co-located with DeVry University at 2450 Crystal Drive, in close proximity to the Crystal City Metro station. Both Chamberlain and DeVry University are owned by DeVry Inc. (NYSE: DV). The new Chamberlain facilities feature almost 13,000 square feet of state-of-the-art nursing skills laboratories, including a simulation lab space comprised of an intensive care unit, a coronary care unit, an obstetrics area and pediatric beds, as well as two general skills labs and a health assessment lab.

Chamberlain students will benefit from a student-centric learning environment enhanced by small class sizes, personalized attention from faculty, diversified clinical learning opportunities and a singular focus on preparing nurses for successful careers.

“At Chamberlain, I get considerable one-on-one time with teachers and advisors, even the dean,” said Natalie Suwinski, a Chamberlain BSN student. “They care about me as a person; I’m not just a number to them, and that really makes a difference.”

The College is currently accepting applications for its first summer class session, which will begin July 6, 2010. A virtual open house for prospective students will be held from 3-8 p.m. ET on Thursday, May 6 at www.chamberlain.edu/Arlington where participants can meet the dean, take a virtual tour of the campus and chat live with admissions advisors. Open houses for prospective students will be held on campus from 5-7 p.m. ET on Thursday, May 13 and Thursday, June 1.
