Currently accepting applications for BSN degree program

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —May 8, 2009— Signaling further progress toward its national expansion goal, 120-year-old Chamberlain College of Nursing announced today that it will establish a new campus in Jacksonville, where it will begin offering classes in July.

About Chamberlain College of Nursing’s New Jacksonville Campus
Chamberlain College of Nursing will offer a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program at its new Jacksonville campus at 5200 Belfort Road. The program can be completed in three years instead of the traditional four, and the new Chamberlain facilities will feature 6,000 square feet of state-of-the-art nursing skills laboratories.

The College is currently accepting applications for its first class session, which will begin July 6. Open houses for prospective students will be held Thursday, May 14, 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.; Saturday, May 16, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.; Thursday, June 4, 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.; and Saturday, June 6, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Chamberlain also offers a Fast-Track RN to BSN Online Degree Completion Program, which allows registered nurses to support their professional growth by earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing in as few as three semesters. This flexible program enables nurses nationwide to complete their coursework online – even while they work. The program is just one example of Chamberlain’s commitment to life-long learning.

In addition, Chamberlain College of Nursing also places strong emphasis on co-curricular learning, which provides students with opportunities to demonstrate and develop their clinical proficiency and earn course credit through community health initiatives both locally and abroad.

Chamberlain College of Nursing, formerly Deaconess College of Nursing, was established in St. Louis in 1889. Chamberlain opened its first campus outside of St. Louis in early 2007 in Columbus, Ohio. In 2008, Chamberlain opened two new campuses in Phoenix, Arizona and Addison (Chicago), Illinois. The Jacksonville campus marks the fourth state into which Chamberlain has expanded, and the school continues to explore opportunities to create a nationwide footprint.

About the National Nursing Shortage
According to the Florida Center for Nursing, the state expects to have a shortage of 52,000 nurses by 2020. The current shortage of nursing professionals does not result from a lack of students who are interested in the field, but rather the limited capacity to educate and train new nurses. The National League for Nursing (NLN) found that U.S. nursing schools turned away an estimated 99,000 qualified applicants to associate and baccalaureate nursing programs during the 2006-2007 academic year. In Florida alone, the Florida Center for Nursing found that during the 2006-2007 academic year, an estimated 3,034 qualified applicants were turned away from baccalaureate nursing programs, and more than a third of those students (1,167) were from northern Florida.

Chamberlain College of Nursing is actively responding to the need for increased access to nursing education, as its Jacksonville location represents the fourth new campus Chamberlain has established over the past three years.

"Florida needs increased access to high-quality nursing education," said Susan Groenwald, president of Chamberlain College of Nursing. "Chamberlain’s new campus in Jacksonville will allow us to help communities throughout the region and the State of Florida respond to the critical and growing shortage of nurses that will intensify as Baby Boomers age and the need for healthcare grows."

Accreditation
Chamberlain College of Nursing is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association www.hlcommission.org, one of the six regional agencies that accredit U.S. colleges and universities at the institutional level. Courses at the Jacksonville campus are approved by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Inclusion of the Jacksonville campus for degree-granting authority within the accreditation relationship will be reviewed through an October 2009 site visit from the HLC. Accreditation provides assurance to the public and to prospective students that standards of quality have been met.
