Chamberlain College of Nursing to Open Phoenix Campus in March 2008
Nursing school to help alleviate Arizona nursing shortage

PHOENIX, AZ —January 2, 2008— Signaling further progress toward its national expansion goals, St. Louis-based Chamberlain College of Nursing announced today that it received approval from the Arizona State Board for Private Postsecondary Education to establish a new campus in Phoenix and will begin offering classes in March 2008. The Board approved Chamberlain’s application at its December 11 meeting. Chamberlain had previously received approval for its expansion plans from the Arizona Board of Nursing on November 14.

Chamberlain College of Nursing, formerly Deaconess College of Nursing, was established in St. Louis, Mo., in 1889. DeVry Inc. purchased the school in March 2005. Chamberlain opened its first campus outside of St. Louis earlier this year in Columbus, Ohio. The Phoenix campus marks the second state into which Chamberlain has expanded, and the school continues to explore opportunities to expand its footprint nationwide.

Chamberlain College of Nursing will offer a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree program at its new Phoenix campus, which will be co-located with DeVry University at 2149 W. Dunlap Avenue. The brand new Chamberlain facilities will include five state-of-the-art nursing skills laboratories.

The college is currently accepting applications for its first class session starting March 3. Open houses for prospective students will be held from 3-8 p.m. on Thursday, January 10, Tuesday, January 15, and Thursday, January 24. Prospective students are urged to collect all required documents, including standardized test scores and official transcripts from all schools attended in order to be considered for the March class. The National Center for Health Workforce Analysis of the Health Resources Services Administration predicts that the U.S. will have almost 1 million fewer registered nurses than it needs by the year 2020. While Arizona is the fastest-growing state in the nation, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, it ranks 45 out of 50 states in the number of registered nurses available per 100,000 state residents. The Arizona Workforce Informer estimates that between 2005-2015, more than 16,000 new nurses will be needed. Yet, the state’s capacity to educate and train new nurses is not keeping up with this growing need. According to the Arizona State Board of Nursing, more than 2,000 qualified applicants are denied entrance to the state’s nursing schools each year due to a lack of capacity.

“Arizona needs increased access to high-quality nursing education and we look forward to serving the Phoenix community and the State of Arizona,” said Susan Groenwald, president of Chamberlain College of Nursing. “The expansion of Chamberlain’s new campus in Phoenix will help communities throughout the State of Arizona respond to the critical and growing shortage of nurses that will intensify as Baby Boomers age and the need for healthcare grows.”

Chamberlain College of Nursing is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association. Its Bachelor of Science in Nursing program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC) and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
