ST. LOUIS —August 1, 2006— Faculty and staff at Chamberlain College of Nursing, formerly Deaconess College of Nursing, officially welcomed the newly named institution’s first freshman class at a special reception celebrating the school’s recent name change and its plans for the future.
“Just as our school is embarking on a new era of nursing education under the Chamberlain name, these men and women are themselves taking the first step towards a rewarding career in nursing. We welcome them today to the Chamberlain family,” said Susan Groenwald, president of Chamberlain College of Nursing, at the July 20 reception.
The name “Chamberlain” exemplifies the strength and solid, historical foundation of Deaconess, while also positioning the school for future growth. Derived from the Middle English word chaumberlein, which means “chief steward,” the name also alludes not only to the critical role of the nurse as the central steward and coordinator of patient care, but to the fact that Chamberlain College of Nursing acts as the central coordinator of our students’ nursing education, Groenwald said.
DeVry Inc., one of the nation’s leading higher education companies, purchased Deaconess in March 2005. Under terms of the purchase agreement, DeVry’s use of the Deaconess name expires on September 30, 2006.
The federal government estimates that more than 1 million new and replacement nurses will be needed by 2012. And for the first time, the U.S. Department of Labor has identified nursing as the top occupation in terms of job growth through the year 2012. Yet, the capacity to educate and train new nurses is lacking: more than 15,000 students were turned away from U.S. nursing schools last year due to a lack of space.
Chamberlain College of Nursing offers an associate of science in nursing degree (ASN), an ASN degree program for licensed nurse practitioners and a bachelor of science in nursing degree (BSN). Additionally, a “Fast-Track Online RN-to-BSN Completion Program” supports the professional growth of registered nurses across the country by providing them the opportunity to earn a bachelor of science in nursing degree in as few as 3 semesters. This flexible program allows students to complete their coursework online while fulfilling complementary clinical practice requirements at healthcare institutions in their local areas.
