College focused solely on nursing is currently accepting applications

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. — Jan. 5, 2012 — Chamberlain College of Nursing is opening a new campus in Indianapolis with classes scheduled to begin in February 2012. This expansion reinforces Chamberlain’s commitment to increase access to nursing education that will address the growing demand for nurses. The Indianapolis campus features Chamberlain’s SIMCARE CENTERTM, which provides high-tech simulated patient care in clinical learning environments, and the Center for Academic Success, which provides students with comprehensive academic resources and support.

“There will be greater demand on the healthcare system in coming years, and our workforce needs to be ready,” said Susan Groenwald, Ph.D. (c), MSN, national president of Chamberlain College of Nursing. “Indiana will not be able to build a strong nursing workforce if prospective nurses do not have adequate access to quality nursing education. Through the opening of the Indianapolis campus, Chamberlain will educate future nursing professionals to meet the state’s healthcare demands.”

In less than 10 years, the United States is projected to have a shortage of one million nurses, according to the Health Resources and Services Administration1 . In Indiana, more than 12,000 additional nurses will be needed by 20182, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, which also lists registered nurse as one of the state’s top five fastest-growing jobs in the coming years3. At the same time, the Indiana Nursing Workforce Development Center estimates that in 2010, more than 1,600 qualified applicants to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree programs in the state were turned away due to lack of space at existing nursing schools4.

The Indianapolis campus will offer an on-site BSN degree program that can be completed in as few as three years of year-round study instead of the typical four years with summers off. The Indianapolis BSN degree program was approved by the Indiana State Board of Nursing at its Aug. 18, 2011 meeting and by the Indiana Commission on Proprietary Education on March 8, 2011. The campus was approved by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools at its Dec. 19, 2011 Institutional Actions Council meeting.

Chamberlain’s Indianapolis campus is led by President Margaret Harvey, Ph.D., MSN, MAT, RN. Dr. Harvey joins Chamberlain with more than 25 years of experience in the healthcare industry, including practice, instruction, and administration. Previously, Dr. Harvey served as interim dean of nursing at Davenport University in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The new Indianapolis campus is Chamberlain’s first in Indiana and its tenth in the U.S. Located at 9100 Keystone Crossing, Chamberlain will be co-located with DeVry University and its Keller Graduate School of Management, all part of DeVry Inc. The Chamberlain facilities feature high-tech nursing skills laboratories, including a simulation lab composed of an intensive care unit, a coronary care unit, an obstetrics area and pediatric beds, as well as two general skills labs and a health assessment lab. Chamberlain students will benefit from a student-centric learning environment enhanced by small class sizes, personalized attention from faculty, diversified clinical learning opportunities and a singular focus on preparing nurses for successful careers.

Chamberlain is currently accepting applications for the three-year BSN degree program for its spring class semester, which will begin Feb. 27, 2012. Open houses for prospective students will be held on campus on Thursday, Jan. 12 from 3-7 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 14 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 26 from 3-7 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 28 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. For more information or to RSVP, visit chamberlain.edu/events.
