DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. – July 10, 2012 – Addressing the need to educate more nurses about health policy, Chamberlain College of Nursing launched its Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Healthcare Policy specialty track. This new specialty track prepares nurses for leadership positions that require an understanding of economic, political and social issues to influence healthcare policy and improve patient outcomes.
In its call-to-action report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) emphasizes that nurses need a voice during health policymaking and must engage in implementation efforts related to healthcare reform. Additionally, the IOM recommends that nurses serve on advisory committees, commissions and boards where policy decisions are made to further improve healthcare systems. By achieving higher and more specialized levels of education, nurses can be positioned to help transform the profession and reform the delivery of care.
“As debates regarding healthcare reform intensify, nurses need to lend their expertise and drive critical policy discussions,” said Dr. Diana Meeks-Sjostrom, dean of graduate programs for Chamberlain College of Nursing. “Chamberlain’s MSN Healthcare Policy specialty track helps expand the professional focus of our nursing students and educates them to influence policy on local, national and global levels.”
Chamberlain is now accepting applications for the fall semester, which begins on Sept. 3, 2012. The MSN Healthcare Policy specialty track can be completed in two years of full-time study and provides a foundation for nurses to become healthcare policy leaders, researchers, advocates and activists. Coursework includes the study of healthcare systems, politics and policy, as well as economics and global health.
Chamberlain’s MSN degree program is a post-baccalaureate professional degree designed to prepare nurses for expanding roles in healthcare and enhance their opportunities for professional advancement. In addition to the completion of the core nursing courses, MSN students can select one of four specialty tracks: Educator, Executive, Healthcare Policy or Informatics. Qualified Chamberlain students also have the opportunity to earn both a MSN degree from Chamberlain and with additional coursework, a Master of Business Administration degree from DeVry University’s Keller Graduate School of Management.
