Chamberlain College of Nursing professor honored for longstanding dedication to research and academic innovation


DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. – Sept. 11, 2013 – Dee McGonigle, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, CNE, a professor in the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree program at Chamberlain College of Nursing, is to be inducted as a fellow of the National League for Nursing’s (NLN) Academy of Nursing Education on Sept. 20, at the annual NLN Education Summit in Washington, D.C. Dr. McGonigle is one of 28 distinguished nurse educators selected for the honor this year. The inductees join 154 current fellows who represent nursing schools and programs throughout the United States.

“The National League for Nursing relies on these accomplished individuals as allies in our efforts to prepare the numbers of excellent nurse educators we need if we are to eliminate the shortage of nurses plaguing America’s healthcare institutions,” said Beverly A. Malone, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, chief executive officer of the NLN. “Nurse faculty and colleagues from other fields who contribute to excellence in nursing education and to the preparation of a nursing workforce that meets the needs of our ever-changing healthcare environment deserve this public recognition and the gratitude of all who are eager to elevate the status of the profession.”

With more than 35 years in the nursing industry, Dr. McGonigle is being recognized for her longstanding dedication to research and for creatively enhancing distance teaching and learning experiences. She co-authored two textbooks, authored more than 100 professional articles and co-founded the Online Journal of Nursing Informatics, for which she is currently editor-in-chief. A pioneer in exploring and discussing the intersection of nursing and technology, Dr. McGonigle co-founded the Association for Educational Communications and Technology’s Special Interest Group for Health Technology and Education. She also developed the Foundation of Knowledge Model, which explains the relationship between nursing informatics and the science of nursing, and the ETHICAL Model, which is used to address ethical challenges in the information age.

“Dr. McGonigle’s work to continuously improve nursing education and strengthen the industry’s adoption of informatics exemplifies the critical role nurse educators play in transforming healthcare,” said Susan Groenwald, Ph.D., MSN, president of Chamberlain College of Nursing. “We congratulate her on this achievement and look forward to her future contributions in the nursing field.”

Dr. McGonigle joins two Chamberlain professionals who were previously inducted into the NLN’s Academy of Nursing Education. Julie McAfooes, MS, RN-BC, CNE, ANEF, web development manager for Chamberlain’s online programs, was inducted in 2010, and Janice Unruh Davidson, Ph.D., RN-BC, FNP-BC, NEA-BC, CNE, FAANP, ANEF, Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program professor, was inducted in 2012.

The NLN established the Academy of Nursing Education in 2007 to foster excellence in nursing education by recognizing and capitalizing on the wisdom of nurse educators who have made significant contributions to the field. Fellowship candidates are evaluated by The Academy of Nursing Education Review Panel in several categories, including innovative teaching, nursing education research and academic leadership. Fellows provide visionary leadership, serve as mentors and support the vision of the NLN.
