The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) is a post-baccalaureate professional degree designed to prepare nurses for expanding roles in healthcare and enhance opportunities for professional advancement. The MSN curriculum provides core courses in nursing theory, research, leadership, professional role development, and informatics in healthcare. In addition to the completion of the core nursing courses, the student selects one of the three specialty tracks:
All MSN students complete a practicum specific to their chosen specialty track, allowing them to apply their newly acquired skills in real-world settings.
MSN graduates will be prepared to work in the field of nursing education or to take a leadership role in a healthcare organization. The graduate will exhibit well-developed skills in inquiry, leadership, and communication and will have a strong foundation for further graduate study.

Chamberlain College of Nursing’s flexible online Master of Science in Nursing degree program allows registered nurses to advance their nursing careers by earning an MSN degree in as few as 6 semesters.
The Executive Specialty track builds the foundational skills essential to nurse leaders. Courses in the MSN Executive Specialty track include the foundations of organizational leadership, including managerial communication, organizational change, and decision-making. Students also complete a leadership practicum, allowing them to develop leadership skills.

MSN & MBA Option After completing the Chamberlain MSN Executive Specialty Track degree program, graduates have the option to apply to Keller’s MBA degree program. Qualifying credits earned in Chamberlain’s MSN Executive Specialty Track program can apply to the Keller program so students can earn their MBA with only eight additional courses instead of the 16 courses normally required for the MBA.

In tandem with its new Master of Science in Nursing Informatics Specialty Track, Chamberlain College of Nursing is proud to announce the hire of three faculty experts: Dr. Toni Hebda, Dr. Kathleen Hunter and Dr. Dee McGonigle:
Toni Hebda, PhD, RN, BSN, MNEd, MSIS Toni Hebda, PhD, RN, BSN, MNEd, MSIS, joins Chamberlain College of Nursing with more than 30 years of experience in the fields of nursing and nursing education. She has published more than 15 articles in prestigious nursing journals and handbooks on topics such as informatics competencies, the TIGER Initiative, nursing and information systems and computer-assisted nursing instruction. Dr. Hebda is primarily interested in informatics as a way to support the work of nurses and as a means to improve healthcare delivery. She holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Duquesne University School of Nursing, a master’s degree in nursing education from the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, a doctoral degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Education and a master’s degree in information systems from the University of Pittsburgh School of Library and Information Science.
Kathleen Hunter, PhD, RN-BC Kathleen Hunter, PhD, RN-BC, has been a nursing and healthcare education expert for more than 40 years. After conducting clinical practice in critical care units for 12 years, she began practicing nursing informatics, working with end-users and with information systems design, development, testing, implementation and evaluation. Dr. Hunter’s experience and education led to several prestigious opportunities, including a senior informatics policy position where she directed funded research, managed the recognition of nursing informatics as a distinct specialty, led the establishment of the Patient Care Work Group with Health Level Seven and co-chaired the first Education Work Group of the Computer-Based Patient Record Institute. As a registered nurse, Dr. Hunter is passionate about educating and informing healthcare consumers and enabling them to make full use of healthcare informatics applications. She holds a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree and a doctoral degree from the University of Maryland.
Dee McGonigle, PhD, RN, FACCE, FAAN Dee McGonigle, PhD, RN, FACCE, FAAN, brings 35 years of experience in nursing and nursing informatics to Chamberlain College of Nursing. She began her nursing career as an intensive care unit staff nurse in an urban teaching hospital and pursued teaching positions while advancing her education. After being introduced to the field of informatics while working towards her master’s degree at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Dr. McGonigle co-founded the Online Journal of Nursing Informatics (OJNI), a professional, scholarly, peer-reviewed journal that continues to evolve. Among her many subsequent accomplishments was the co-founding of the Special Interest Group for Health Technology and Education (SIGHTE), the development of the Foundation of Knowledge Model and the ETHICAL Model used to deal with ethical challenges brought about by the volatile information age. Currently, she is a member of the Informatics and Technology Expert Panel (ITEP) for the American Academy of Nursing, the Editor-in-Chief of the Online Journal of Nursing Informatics (OJNI) and a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. Dr. McGonigle has co-authored two text books and written more than 100 articles. She holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Penn State University, where she is a Professor Emerita (retired after 25 years), a master’s degree in family in the community and nursing education from Indiana University and a doctoral degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh.

Students in Chamberlain’s MSN degree program are required to complete up to two 100-hour practicum experiences in lieu of on-site clinicals. Practicum hour requirements are determined by the specialty track in which the student is enrolled.
The culminating courses of each of the MSN specialty tracks are the practicum experiences. The practicum courses provide students an opportunity to apply newly developed skills and theoretical knowledge to real-world practice situations. Prior to these unique courses, the graduate student has demonstrated an understanding of the theoretical foundations of the nursing specialty track. This final concentrated professional experience helps to further prepare students for an advanced practice role. Additionally, it allows students to enhance their skills in communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and professionalism.
