Chamberlain College of Nursing president recognized for advancing health practice through longstanding career contributions
DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. – Sept. 24, 2014 – Susan Groenwald, Ph.D., RN, ANEF, president of Chamberlain College of Nursing, is to be inducted as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (Academy) at the Academy’s annual conference in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 18. Dr. Groenwald is one of 168 distinguished nurses selected for the honor this year. The inductees join more than 2,200 current fellows representing nurses in education, management, practice and research throughout the United States.
"The American Academy of Nursing welcomes this stellar cohort of new fellows,” said Academy President Diana Mason, Ph.D., RN, FAAN. “As clinicians, researchers, educators, executives and leaders in all sectors of our society, they are joining the nation's thought leaders in nursing and healthcare as we work together to drive reform of America’s health system."
A nurse and educator for more than four decades, Dr. Groenwald has advanced nursing practice and healthcare through extensive leadership in oncology nursing education and practice, and through her commitment to developing nurse leaders who deliver extraordinary patient care. As an early leader in oncology nursing, Dr. Groenwald helped create the first practice standards for the specialty and authored an award-winning oncology nursing textbook.
Dr. Groenwald joined Chamberlain College of Nursing in 2006 and has increased access to nursing education by growing the college from one campus to 14 campuses nationwide offering Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree programs and launching robust post-licensure education offerings, including the Registered Nurse to BSN degree completion option; five tracks of a master's degree program in nursing, including a Family Nurse Practitioner track; and two tracks in a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program. Additionally, she created and implemented Chamberlain Care, an approach that transformed the college to a culture of caring and student success. Chamberlain Care is exemplified in Chamberlain’s unique student academic success model, which provides strong academic support and resources as well as extraordinary student care that empowers students to achieve their career goals and deliver exceptional patient care.
“Dr. Groenwald’s vision for Chamberlain is leading the education of 37,000 current nursing students and graduates with bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees during a time when there is a growing demand for nurses prepared to meet the expanding healthcare needs in the U.S. and around the world,” said Richard Cowling, PhD, APRN-BC, AHN-BC, FAAN, vice president of academic affairs at Chamberlain College of Nursing. “We applaud Dr. Groenwald’s commitment to transforming healthcare worldwide, advancing nursing practice and influencing healthcare policy and outcomes as she accepts this recognition of her achievements from the American Academy of Nursing.”
Fellowship applicants must be sponsored by two current Academy fellows and prove significant and sustaining contributions to the healthcare industry. However, induction goes beyond recognition of fellows’ past contributions. All Academy fellows are expected to work to enhance the quality of nursing in America’s health system; promote healthy aging and human development; reduce health disparities and inequalities; shape healthy behaviors and environments; integrate mental and physical health; and strengthen the nursing and health delivery system nationally and internationally.
