Chamberlain University and Bridge Senior Living Launch Clinical Partnership to Introduce Nursing Students to Gerontology Field

CHICAGO/ORLANDO – March 1, 2022 –Chamberlain University and Bridge Senior Living today announced a clinical partnership for nursing students to gain experience in senior care communities as the nation faces nursing shortages and increased elder and long term healthcare needs.

Bridge Senior Living is an industry leader in communities offering a full continuum of care, including independent living, assisted living and memory care across 16 states. The initiative will first be offered in Georgia and Louisiana and is designed to expand to as many as 14 other states.

Through the initiative, Chamberlain University pre-licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Online program students will have the option to obtain clinical experience in Bridge Senior Living communities where they can gain insight into the specific needs of senior care while part of a supervised educational environment. The four Bridge Senior Living communities that started in January and will host nursing students in rotation include: Magnolia Brook on Siegen in Baton Rouge, La., as well as three Metro Atlanta communities: Somerby Sandy Springs, Somerby Peachtree City and The Landings at Norcross.

“This collaboration with Bridge Senior Living aligns with Chamberlain University’s commitment to address the nation’s critical healthcare needs through relevant clinical-workforce experiences and educational opportunities,” said Chamberlain President Karen Cox, Ph.D., RN, RACHE, FAAN. “As our nation’s population ages, it’s imperative for us to find ways to connect students with these specialties while also supporting advanced quality of patient care across the Bridge Senior Living communities to which they are assigned.”

As a result of the pandemic, there are widely reported nursing shortages across the U.S. according to statistics compiled by the Urban Institute, the number of Americans over the age of 65 will more than double in the next 40 years, and the number of adults 85 and older – the group most often needing help with basic personal care – will nearly quadruple by 2040. With larger numbers of older adults, there will be an increased need for geriatric care, including care for individuals with chronic diseases and comorbidities, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

“This partnership is a win-win for Chamberlain University student nurses and for Bridge Senior Living communities,” said Robert Goyette, COO of Bridge Senior Living. “In addition to providing hands-on experience to student nurses, the biggest win is the additional personal care our Bridge Senior Living residents will enjoy. The partnership will offer an instrumental introduction to senior living as a vital part of the healthcare arena, allowing nursing students endless educational opportunities while starting to change the dialogue for senior living operators.

“After we launch the initiative through four communities in two states, we are eager to expand the program to further benefit from Chamberlain University’s footprint of nursing programs, which geographically aligns with our 30 Bridge Senior Living communities spanning 16 states in the Eastern U.S.,” Goyette added.

The initiative also further advances the mission of Adtalem Global Education, the parent company of Chamberlain, as a provider of healthcare workforce talent. Chamberlain has a 130-year history of excellence in health care education, and also offers an Online MSN Program Specialty Track of Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner: Acute and Primary Care.

Providing nursing students with opportunities to develop an interest in specialty fields earlier in their educational journey is the focus of the university, which also includes a recently-launched perioperative specialty training program developed by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and available through Chamberlain.
