PHOENIX, AZ – January 28, 2008 – Chamberlain College of Nursing announced that it has signed formal agreements for the provision of clinical opportunities for Chamberlain students with more than 10 local hospitals and healthcare providers, including members of the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association. Members include Casa Grande Regional Medical Center, HealthSouth, La Paz Regional Hospital, Maricopa Medical Center and Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

Approved to open its Phoenix campus by the Arizona State Board of Private Postsecondary Education in November 2007, Chamberlain College of Nursing will offer the bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree program and is currently accepting applications for its first class session, which will begin March 3.

Chamberlain College of Nursing, formally Deaconess College of Nursing, was established in St. Louis in 1889. The Phoenix campus marks Chamberlain’s second expansion into another state, and the College continues to explore possibilities to expand into additional states.

“Clinical experiences at outstanding hospitals and other healthcare facilities, such as those that are part of the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association, are critical to Chamberlain’s ability to prepare compassionate and clinically proficient nurses,” said Susan Groenwald, president, Chamberlain College of Nursing. “We look forward to working with our clinical partners to develop a highly-skilled nursing workforce needed in the state of Arizona.”

The National Center for Health Workforce Analysis of the Health Resources Services Administration predicts that the U.S. will have almost 1 million fewer registered nurses than it needs by the year 2020. While Arizona is the fastest-growing state in the nation, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, it ranks 45th out of 50 states in the number of registered nurses available per 100,000 state residents. The Arizona Workforce Informer estimates that, between 2005-2015, more than 16,000 new nurses will be needed. Yet, the state’s capacity to educate and train new nurses is not keeping up with this growing need. According to the Arizona State Board of Nursing, more than 2,000 qualified applicants are denied entrance to the state’s nursing schools each year due to a lack of capacity.

“Arizona has a significant shortage of registered nurses,” said Adda Alexander, RN, MBA, executive vice president for the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association. “Increasing the number of nursing education programs will prepare more registered nurses for the important job of caring for the people of Arizona. We welcome Chamberlain College of Nursing to Arizona and wish the College, as well as its students, great success.”
