At Chamberlain Columbus, students and faculty recently worked together to help children more than 2,000 miles away.
The Student Nurses Association (SNA) set the goal of collecting 100 washcloths, 100 boxes of crayons, 100 small toys, toothbrushes and toothpaste for 100 children in Colombia who were about to receive free surgery from Operation Smile to repair a cleft lip, cleft palate or other facial deformity.
SNA members created a giant smile poster and placed a donation box in the hall by the labs. Emails from SNA also kept everyone apprised of the progress toward the goal.
In a short timeframe, they surpassed their goal — receiving twice as many washcloths as they were hoping to collect. Donations came not just from students but also from faculty and staff.
“The most amazing thing was how many people came together to make this happen,” said Jennie Gates, BSN student and Student Nurses Association member.
