Chamberlain College of Nursing Establishes New Campus in Cleveland’s Health-Tech Corridor — September 18, 2012

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. — Sept. 18, 2012 — Chamberlain College of Nursing is opening a new campus in Cleveland’s Health-Tech Corridor and is now accepting applications for admission to the spring semester that begins Jan. 7, 2013. This new campus provides access to the Health-Tech Corridor’s world-renowned healthcare research and clinical institutions and reinforces Chamberlain’s commitment to addressing the growing demand for nurses in Ohio. The Cleveland campus is also Chamberlain’s first campus to receive a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Concern about the significance of a statewide nursing shortage is evident in reports from nursing organizations. For instance, researchers at the Health Policy Institute of Ohio project a deficit of more than 32,000 nurses in Ohio by 2020[1].

“I am proud that Chamberlain College of Nursing is responding to the long-term need for nurses by opening a new facility in Cleveland,” said State Sen. Shirley Smith, who represents the 21st Senate District where the new campus is located. “Chamberlain will have access to several of the country’s best medical institutions located in the Health-Tech Corridor, an area that reflects our city’s dynamism and vision. Because of the area’s resources and talent, I believe that there is no better place to train nurses and to advance the profession than here in Cleveland.”

The Cleveland campus features Chamberlain’s SIMCARE CENTERTM, which provides high-tech simulated patient care in clinical learning environments, and a Center for Academic Success, which offers students comprehensive academic resources and support. Additionally, Chamberlain’s LEED Gold certification, awarded as a mark of excellence, recognizes the campus’ higher environmental performance through the use of sustainable materials, energy-efficient building standards, and healthier indoor environments.

“By locating the campus in Cleveland’s Health-Tech Corridor, a hub known for exceptional research, innovation and patient care, Chamberlain is positioned to increase access to nursing education in a state that turned away more than 2,300 qualified nursing students last year,[2]” said Susan Groenwald, PhD(c), MSN, national president of Chamberlain College of Nursing. “The Cleveland campus’ LEED Gold certification also demonstrates Chamberlain’s effort to reduce the impact of our buildings on the environment and encourage sustainable business practices in communities where we live and work.”

Chamberlain’s Cleveland campus offers an on-site Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program that can be completed in as few as three years of year-round study instead of the typical four years with summers off. The Cleveland BSN degree program was approved by the Ohio Board of Nursing at its March 15, 2012 meeting, and the campus was approved by the Ohio Board of Regents on March 8, 2012, and by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools at its Sept. 10, 2012 meeting.

Adele Webb, Ph.D., RN, DPNAP, FAAN, has been appointed the president of the new campus. Dr. Webb has more than three decades of experience in the healthcare industry in a range of education and healthcare leadership roles, including contributions to a scope of consulting projects for high-profile organizations such as the White House Office of National AIDS Policy and the World Health Organization, among others.

This is Chamberlain’s 12th campus in the nation and its second in Ohio. Chamberlain’s Columbus, Ohio campus opened in 2007. Located at 6700 Euclid Ave., Suite 201, the new Cleveland campus features nursing skills laboratories, including a simulation lab composed of an intensive care unit, a coronary care unit, an obstetrics area and pediatric beds, as well as general skills labs and health assessment labs. Chamberlain students can benefit from a student-centric learning environment enhanced by small class sizes, personalized attention from faculty, diversified clinical learning opportunities, experiential learning and a singular focus on preparing nurses for successful careers.
