Chamberlain College of Nursing president recognized for contributions to oncology nursing and nursing education

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. – Aug. 27, 2014 – Susan Groenwald, Ph.D., MSN, RN, president of Chamberlain College of Nursing, is to be inducted as a fellow of the National League for Nursing’s (NLN) Academy of Nursing Education on Sept. 19 at the annual NLN Education Summit in Phoenix. Dr. Groenwald is one of 20 distinguished nurse educators and two honorary fellows selected this year. The inductees join 165 current fellows who represent nursing schools and programs throughout the United States.

“Fellows support the mission and core values of the National League for Nurses and assist in the work required to prepare graduates from all types of nursing programs,” said Beverly A. Malone, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, CEO of the NLN. “They serve as mentors and resources for new educators and those in clinical practice who hope to someday enter the ranks of nurse faculty.”

During her career at Rush University Medical Center where she was the director of the oncology nursing graduate program, Dr. Groenwald was elected to the inaugural board of the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS). While serving on the board, she helped create the first standards for oncology nursing practice and co-founded the first chapter of the ONS in Chicago. One of her several textbooks in oncology, “Cancer Nursing: Principles and Practice,” received the “American Journal of Nursing” Book of the Year Award twice.

Since joining Chamberlain in 2006, Dr. Groenwald has increased access to nursing education by growing the college from one campus in St. Louis to 14 campuses nationwide and by developing robust online post-licensure offerings, including the Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree completion option, five tracks of a master’s degree program in nursing including a Family Nurse Practitioner track and two tracks in a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program. Dr. Groenwald’s vision is leading to the education of more than 36,000 current nursing students and graduates in bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs[i]. Additionally, she created and successfully implemented a model known as Chamberlain Care that transformed the college to a culture of caring. Chamberlain Care is exemplified through Chamberlain’s unique student academic success model which provides robust academic support and resources as well as extraordinary student care that empowers students to achieve their career goals and to deliver exceptional patient care.

“We are proud to see Dr. Groenwald’s commitment to excellence in nursing education recognized by the National League for Nursing,” said Richard Cowling, PhD, APRN-BC, AHN-BC, FAAN, vice president of academic affairs at Chamberlain College of Nursing. “As a visionary leader, Dr. Groenwald is dedicated to advancing nursing education and the industry to meet the changing demands of the complex healthcare system and to improve patient outcomes.”

Chamberlain is committed to supporting a team of faculty and leaders who are passionate about advancing nursing education and the profession. Previous Chamberlain inductees into NLN’s Academy of Nursing Education include Julie McAfooes, MS, RN-BC, CNE, ANEF, web development manager for Chamberlain’s online programs; Janice Unruh Davidson, PhD, RN-BC, FNP-BC, NEA-BC, CNE, FAANP, ANEF, Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program professor; and Dee McGonigle, PhD, RN, FAAN, CNE, ANEF, Master of Science in Nursing degree program professor.

The NLN established the Academy of Nursing Education in 2007 to foster excellence in nursing education by recognizing and capitalizing on the wisdom of nurse educators who have made significant contributions to the field. Fellowship candidates are evaluated by The Academy of Nursing Education Review Panel in several categories, including innovative teaching, nursing education research and academic leadership.
