What makes a good practicum?
A good practicum gives you clinical and field experience in the topic that you are studying. Identify your learning objectives early. This will allow you to gain hands-on experience applying your knowledge in a practical setting. Don’t be afraid to look at your current workplace or other familiar sites for your placement.
How do I find the right preceptor?
A quality preceptor will collaborate with Chamberlain faculty to promote your success in the practicum. The preceptor may be a mentor or agency instructor, depending on your program or track. You can find them by networking with peers and professors in your field, tapping your personal network and even cold calling. Be persistent — great preceptors are out there wanting to hear from you.
How can I stay successful during my practicum?
While your practicum helps you gain skills, you’ll also benefit from mentorship. Network, network, network! Make connections with the practitioners at your site and be proactive to get the most out of your experience. Come prepared to work and learn every day, stay organized and stick to the basics: you’re here because you want to make yourself and your community better. Take pride in your work, and your preceptors will be proud of you.

FAQs
Request Practicum Commitment® assistance three sessions in advance and submit documentation of three formal site and/or preceptor denials. Submit your request via MyChamberlain, complete the preparation tasks and comply with all site-specific requirements to stay eligible.
Practicum Commitment® is a service Chamberlain provides at no cost to students. The practicum itself is part of your coursework, so if you qualify for financial aid in your other courses, you potentially will for the practicum courses as well.
We encourage you to approach mentors in your educational journey, such as a respected childhood doctor or your former manager at an internship. Choose someone who will invest in your journey and truly mentor you.
Denials can be work-issued emails or signed letters, may be completed by an administrator/prospective preceptor at the site and may not be reused from previous Practicum Commitment® requests. Denials may be verified.
