Shannon Whittington, DNP '22, never planned to tackle the complexities of serving distinct populations in healthcare, but when her hospital system approached her with a new role, she embraced it with her trademark purpose and compassion.
That journey began in 1986 when she graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville with a BSN in Nursing. In a class of seven, she felt the isolation many students encounter. She reached out to her classmates, forming bonds that remain today. This early desire for community, along with strong leadership and a drive to understand people, has shaped her career ever since.
Over 20+ years in nursing, Dr. Whittington has cared for thousands of patients, developed specialized training, authored an award-winning book, and launched her own consulting business. She now works with clients nationwide and presents at major nephrology and nursing conferences, holding multiple certifications including as a certified leadership speaker.
But the path was far from simple. Balancing clinical work with consulting, authorship, a fast-growing podcast, and advocacy work creates a demanding schedule. She admits the workload can take over—but in a good way. "I love this," Dr. Whittington says. "I literally do it every day."
Dr. Whittington's story exemplifies Chamberlain Care® in action—a healthcare professional positively impacting health nationwide. It's a journey from patient bedside to national stage that she sums up simply: "it's all about helping patients be seen, be heard—and be proud."
