Florida’s population is surging,1 and more and more of its residents—including healthcare professionals—are reaching retirement age.2 That combination is driving a booming demand for nurse practitioners.3 In Jacksonville, Florida, nurse practitioner Daniele Dumas is already stepping up, making sure patients get the care they need.
“I can stand in the gap and address two critical shortages: the aging population, and the aging provider pool where physicians are retiring, leaving a gap to fill,” says Dumas, MSN, RN, FNP-BC.
Finding Her Path as a Florida Nurse
Dumas has always called Florida home. It’s “the state of beautiful beaches and sunshine,” she says. But as a Florida nurse, she also sees other sides of the Sunshine State, too—like how growth is straining the healthcare system.
“I was inspired to get my Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) because I wanted career advancement. I have always been motivated to learn more and do more,” she says. “I had a great desire for greater impact on patient care and the healthcare system. People have lost faith in our healthcare system and I wanted to help bring back the trust that is lacking.”
When Dumas chose Chamberlain University, it was a practical step that turned into a transformative one.
“I chose Chamberlain because it was accredited, and they made admission easy for me to obtain. I chose Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) as my specialization because I wanted to be able to do a variety of things and have a variety of skills in the workforce, and the FNP allowed me to obtain that.”
Studying Through a Pandemic
Her MSN experience unfolded during extraordinary times. “I was a student during COVID-19. Most clinical sites were not really accepting students,” Dumas recalls. “Because I had started my search early, I was able to secure two locations for my practicum experience. It was so hard, but I managed to get in all of my hours by the time I was to graduate.”
She points to Chamberlain’s flexibility as a lifeline. “Chamberlain was helpful to those that couldn’t get their hours and allowed them to continue to work toward their hours after graduation. We weren’t held back if we couldn’t get the hours in that session.”
Balancing It All
For Dumas, the academic challenges of earning an MSN were layered on top of the everyday demands of work and family.
“I worked full time and I was raising kids while in school,” she says. “I balanced full-time work, children, and rigorous study, which is no small feat. Beyond accomplishment, I offered my children a live demonstration of perseverance, dedication, and service—values my profession cherishes.”
Today, a Florida Nurse Practitioner
Now, at ArchWell Health in Jacksonville, Dumas is using her education and training to make a tangible impact as a family nurse practitioner working in primary care.
“The role I take on is addressing needs of vulnerable populations such as the aging, those that have disparities, and the marginalized.”
For her, an MSN-FNP degree was the foundation. Real growth came from applying it.
“With my degree from Chamberlain, I am able to meet real, growing needs in the Florida healthcare system. I overcame pandemic-era educational setbacks and still got hours, skills, and confidence. I was able to navigate a broken clinical placement system and turned it into success, all the while bringing my family along on a journey of ambition balanced with love and service—a rare legacy.”
Her advice for those thinking about earning an MSN? Secure your practicum site early. Be tenacious. “Go into the medical office in person. I believe this really helped me secure my practicum site,” she says.
Dumas also offers this encouragement for RNs with an eye on the future: “Go for it! … You are not too old or too young to pursue your dreams.”
