7 Great Apps for Nursing Students

May 09, 2025 by Chamberlain University

A career in nursing can be both rewarding and challenging, and nursing school will present you with new chances to learn, grow, and excel. As you complete your Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), you will need to stay organized and motivated as you deepen your understanding of nursing principles, theories, and practices.

You may also want to find ways to care for yourself; taking time for self-reflection and mindfulness can help BSN students stay grounded as they juggle nursing school, existing jobs, and personal commitments. It is also a good habit to establish a pattern of self-care while in nursing school that can serve you during your journey as a nurse.

Nursing Apps to Help BSN Students

Whether you are attending an in-person BSN program or earning your BSN online, there are a number of nursing and healthcare apps that can prove beneficial.

Nursing Reference Apps

Nursing Central – One of the most comprehensive nursing apps for BSN students, Nursing Central is actually five popular healthcare apps combined into one resource. The app includes:

  • Davis’s Drug Guide: Regularly updated, this reference includes information on drugs and medications currently on the market and includes information about dosing and interactions. You will also find educational resources for patients.
  • Taber’s Medical Dictionary: This excellent study resource includes more than 75,000 medical definitions enhanced with videos, images, and audio pronunciations.
  • Davis’s Laboratory and Diagnostic Tests: This guide dives into medical tests, including understanding rationale and results, pretest requirements, procedures that occur during tests, and how to instruct patients after tests are complete.
  • Diseases and Disorders: This reference offers understanding and exploration of 250 medical conditions, from symptoms to diagnoses to prognoses.
  • Prime PubMed: This article repository is your complete medical database, including abstracts, medical and nursing journals, and suggested articles.

Nursing Clinical Skills and Study Apps

PEPID – This app is a robust medical reference tool that includes news alerts for medical professionals, diagnostic tools and videos, and drug identification and interaction warnings. Hospitals and care centers can customize the app for their staff. App users can also access Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits.

Picmonic – This app, designed specifically for nursing school students, offers visual guidance and mnemonic support to help students learn nursing concepts and study for nursing exams. It includes thousands of videos and images designed to help you master nursing concepts quickly, as well as study aids for specific nursing exams, including NCLEX and AANP exams. Picmonic is free, but you can upgrade your app with more robust features once it has been downloaded.

Organization and Productivity Apps

Google Keep or Evernote – Great for taking notes and organizing study materials, these apps are designed to keep you focused and productive. Keep track of classwork, assignments, and schedules—for classes, clinicals, and personal commitments.

Notion – This powerful app can help you organize your life, from class notes to clinical guidelines to documents and assignments. With plenty of features, Notion lets you use as much or as little as you need to keep yourself—and your studies—organized and efficient.

Self-Care and Mindfulness Nursing Apps

Nursegrid – One of the most popular shift calculators and social networking apps for nurses, Nursegrid helps nurses take control of their personal and professional schedules. They can also use the app to communicate with other nurses and even switch shifts.

Headspace – This app offers quick, easy mindfulness activities and sleep support. For nurses struggling with finding time to connect with their own mental well-being, Headspace has breathing exercises, calming meditations, and stress relief for relaxation.
