BSN Clinical Rotations FAQ

When do I participate in clinicals?

In Chamberlain’s online BSN program, clinical rotations start in the second semester of your second year. During these rotations, you’ll take the knowledge you’ve gained in your classes and apply it in real-world healthcare settings, working directly with patients under the supervision of experienced professionals. Clinicals continue through your third year, focusing on advanced practice and specialized nursing skill, including pediatrics, complex adult care and community health.

How long are clinicals?

Clinical rotations take place at partner sites and last up to eight days. These rotations are scheduled over a six-week period within an eight-week session. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN exam to become licensed registered nurses.

Where do I participate in clinicals?

Chamberlain partners with over 40  clinical sites across more than 20 states. Clinicals are completed in a variety of settings, including hospitals, long-term care facilities, and community health agencies.

Please see the information above for more details about clinical locations. Clinical site placement is not guaranteed and may require travel.

Is there a skills evaluation needed prior to clinicals?

Yes, a skills evaluation is required. Before beginning clinicals, you will complete a live skills check-off with faculty. Travel to your designated check-off location is necessary.

On-Campus Quality Meets Online Flexibility

Why Chamberlain is the best option for earning your BSN degree online

"Chamberlain was a lifeline to me. It helped me through probably one of my toughest times in life. Everyone here said nursing school is almost the hardest profession or schooling to complete. And Chamberlain just carried me through. They really supported me. They encouraged me. They changed my life."

Courses are broken out into 8-week sessions, with two sessions equaling 1 semester. Once you get to your clinical courses you can expect clinical experiences to occur 4 – 8 days per session with the total number of on-site days ranging from 3 – 6 days. The remaining 1 – 2 days will be virtual. In-person clinical experiences typically occur over a 2-week period. Times are subject to change based on clinical course hour requirements and availability at a clinical partner site.

BSN Degree Online Admission Process

Ready to start? Here's what you'll need for admission

Admission Criteria

Chamberlain University’s BSN Admission Committee applies a holistic admission process when determining academic eligibility. The BSN Admission Committee reviews applicants using a weighted evaluation system that considers several factors: previous coursework, CGPA and HESI Admission Assessment (A2) scores. Additional factors important to student success in nursing school may also be considered. An applicant's most recent educational experience shall be considered by the Chamberlain University BSN Admission Committee.

  • Proof of graduation scale from a Chamberlain recognized High School or an institution accredited by an organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or the U.S. Department of Education1.
  • Official foreign transcripts must be evaluated by a NACES-approved evaluating agency or Chamberlain's Internal Global Transcript Evaluation Services. Applicants who have attended other colleges and have earned at least 24 credit hours, excluding developmental courses may also be considered by the Chamberlain University BSN Admission Committee. Failure to disclose attendance at other colleges/universities is grounds for denial of admission or for expulsion.
  • A completed HESI A2 entrance exam. A custom HESI A2 score is calculated by using a subset of all four exam scores.
  • Applicants from states that offer an approved high school equivalency may also be eligible for admission. To be considered by the Admission Committee, the applicant must have a minimum GED® test score of 551 if taken between 2002-2013 or a minimum score of 600 if taken after 2013. Applicants from states that offer an approved high school equivalency test such as the ETS High School Equivalency Test (HiSET), Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) or California High School Proficiency Exam (CHSPE) in lieu of the GED tests may gain admission by presenting official documentation for having met state requirements for the equivalency of a high school diploma.
  • Florida Locations Only: Re-admitted students who have completed over 75 percent of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program, at a campus other than their intended Florida campus, will not be permitted to request admission to any Chamberlain University Florida campus. Students will remain assigned to their home/primary location and follow the process to complete nursing courses at an alternate campus. Degrees will be conferred at the home/primary Chamberlain campus. NCLEX® applications to test will require use of the degree conferral campus school code.

Pending space availability, applicants deemed academically eligible may be eligible to enroll as a new student at any Chamberlain pre-licensure location and for up to two sessions immediately following the session for which the decision was rendered. The applicant will not need to submit a new application unless their application has expired. If an applicant requests a change to their preferred location or session, additional deadlines may be imposed to reserve enrollment at the new location or in the future session (see Phase II requirements in this section of the catalog).
