DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. and TUCSON, Ariz. — Nov. 29, 2011 — Chamberlain College of Nursing and the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) announced a national clinical partnership that will support children and teenagers with neuromuscular diseases who attend the MDA’s annual weeklong, overnight summer camps located throughout the country. The partnership offers campers enhanced resources while providing Chamberlain’s pre-licensure nursing students with expanded clinical opportunities to learn more about neuromuscular diseases.
"Children with muscular dystrophy look forward to summer camp all year long,” said Dr. Valerie Cwik, executive vice president – research and medical director for the MDA. “MDA summer camp is a place where children with neuromuscular disease who require daily medical and physical care can just be a kid among friends. Our partnership with Chamberlain College of Nursing will enable us to provide additional comprehensive health services to help MDA campers meet the challenges imposed by chronic, progressive diseases so they can fully enjoy their week at summer camp.”
Chamberlain students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program can receive comprehensive clinical education toward their graduation requirements by participating in the MDA summer camps. Under faculty supervision, Chamberlain students will provide support for camp daily activities, such as arts and crafts and adaptive sports, as well as be a part of the camp medical team to assist with common interventions and disease management needed by MDA campers.
"Pediatric clinical education is a challenging experience for student nurses to obtain, particularly with patients with neuromuscular diseases in non-traditional settings," said Dr. Richard Cowling, vice president of academic affairs for Chamberlain College of Nursing. "Through our partnership with the MDA, pre-licensure nursing students can apply their education in immersive environments and receive highly-specialized hands-on experience in pediatrics while also contributing to an unforgettable opportunity for campers.”
Pre-licensure nursing students from Chamberlain, who meet MDA volunteer requirements, may apply to receive clinical education through the MDA partnership. The partnership with the MDA exemplifies Chamberlain’s commitment to providing the educational foundation and extensive, diversified clinical opportunities that graduates need to become compassionate and clinically-proficient nursing professionals.
