Miramar Campus Organizes Community Health Fair
Across the Miramar campus, students, faculty and staff are busy putting the final touches on the Beat the Heat Community Health Fair, to be held Saturday, June 1.
The event is a collaborative effort between Chamberlain College of Nursing and its neighbors on the Miramar campus – DeVry University and Ross University School of Medicine.
“We’re tapping into the skills and resources we have here and bringing them to the community,” explained Chamberlain professor Linda Gettinger-Dinner, DHSc, MSN, ARNP, who is heading up the project.
Students from all three institutions will be playing key roles in the health fair, which will feature everything from skin cancer screenings to yoga.
Adult Health students from Chamberlain will perform BMI screenings, while those enrolled in Mental Health Nursing will help perform memory screenings. Fundamentals students will do blood pressure screenings.
Students enrolled in Collaborative Nursing, one of the last classes in the Chamberlain curriculum plan, are managing the event while gaining valuable leadership experience.
“For us as senior nursing students, it’s exciting – we’re putting into practice all that we have learned,” said Chamberlain student Margie Freisthler, who sits on the Health Fair Committee. “It’s a time for us to shine, to give back to our community and show what we’ve learned over the last two years.”
While participation in the fair is not a class requirement, the enthusiasm and support of Chamberlain students has been overwhelming, said Freisthler.
“It’s representative of the spirit we have on campus that everyone wants to help out," she said. “I’m so proud of our fellow students and how hard they’re working. It makes me proud to say I’m a Chamberlain student."
The Beat the Heat Community Health Fair will be held on Saturday, June 1, from 9 am to 1 pm, at 2300 SW 145th Ave., Miramar, Florida. The event is open to the public.
