Chamberlain’s first Georgia campus aims to help alleviate state’s nursing shortage

For Immediate Release

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. — March 5, 2012 — Chamberlain College of Nursing is opening a new campus in Perimeter Center in Atlanta and is now accepting applications for admission to the summer semester, which begins April 30, 2012. The Atlanta campus features Chamberlain’s SIMCARE CENTERTM, which provides high-tech simulated patient care in clinical learning environments, and a Center for Academic Success, which provides students with comprehensive academic resources and support. This new campus opening reinforces Chamberlain’s commitment to increasing access to nursing education and addresses the growing demand for nurses in Georgia.

“There is a high interest in nursing careers by students in Georgia, but we don’t have enough classroom space or faculty to keep up with the demand,” said U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson. “Chamberlain College of Nursing’s new Atlanta campus will help meet this demand and provide more opportunities for Georgia students in this growing field.”

According to the Health Resources and Services Administration, Georgia faces a projected shortage of more than 32,000 nurses by 2020.1 Yet, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing estimates that more than 2,000 qualified nursing students were turned away from baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs in Georgia due to budget constraints and a lack of faculty and classroom space.2

“If Georgia is going to prevent the anticipated nursing shortage, we must work to address the issue now,” said Susan Groenwald, PhD(c), MSN, national president of Chamberlain College of Nursing. “The current shortage will be exacerbated by the aging nursing workforce and growing number of retirees who will require more healthcare in the coming years. By opening the Atlanta campus, we can increase access to high quality nursing education and provide the nurses that Georgia residents need.”

Chamberlain’s Atlanta campus offers an on-site Bachelor of Science of Nursing (BSN) degree program that can be completed in as few as three years of year-round study instead of the typical four years with summers off. The Atlanta BSN degree program was approved by the Georgia Board of Nursing at its Sept. 14-16, 2011 meeting, and the campus was approved by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools at its Feb. 20, 2012 meeting.

Leila McKinney, DNP, MSN, APRN, NP-C, has been appointed president of the new campus. Dr. McKinney has more than 18 years of experience in the healthcare industry, including practice, instruction and administration. Previously, Dr. McKinney served as national director for online nursing education and dean of nursing at Rasmussen College in Tampa, Fla.

This is Chamberlain’s first campus in Georgia, and its 11th in the nation. Located at 5775 Peachtree Dunwoody Road, NE, Building A, the new Chamberlain campus features nursing skills laboratories, including a simulation lab composed of an intensive care unit, a coronary care unit, an obstetrics area and pediatric beds, as well as two general skills labs and a health assessment lab. Chamberlain students will benefit from a student-centric learning environment enhanced by small class sizes, personalized attention from faculty, diversified clinical learning opportunities, experiential learning and a singular focus on preparing nurses for successful careers.

Open houses for prospective students will be held at the Atlanta campus on Saturday, March 17 from 10 a.m.–1 p.m., Tuesday, March 27 from 3–7 p.m. and Thursday, March 29 from 3–7 p.m. For more information or to RSVP, visit chamberlain.edu/events.
